Should I make one website with two categories or two separate sites?

I am planning to launch a website to complement my two YouTube channels: one focused on technology product reviews and the other on culinary product reviews.

I am currently deliberating between two approaches:
  1. Establishing a single website with two primary categories (Technology & Culinary) under the same domain.
  2. Creating two distinct websites, each dedicated to its respective niche.
I recognize the advantages and disadvantages of both alternatives:
  1. A single website would facilitate easier management and could benefit from aggregated traffic.
  2. Two separate websites would enable me to more effectively target each audience and enhance search engine optimization for each niche.
I aim to drive traffic from my YouTube channels to the website(s) and monetize through affiliate links.

What do you consider to be the most effective approach? Has anyone encountered a similar situation in the past?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

If your objective is to generate traffic from YouTube and monetize through affiliate links, it is advisable to maintain them as separate entities. Technology and culinary domains attract different audiences, exhibit distinct search intents, and require tailored SEO strategies. Google rewards niche authority; therefore, a dedicated technology website will achieve superior rankings for technology-related keywords, and the same principle applies to culinary topics. Moreover, this separation simplifies the monetization process, allowing content, partnerships, and affiliate programs to align precisely with each respective audience. An exception to this recommendation exists if your brand serves as the primary driver—such as when both YouTube channels operate under the same name—in which case a unified website may be a viable option. However, two specialized websites will likely yield better results for sustained SEO performance and monetization.

Managing two distinct websites entails a substantial workload, representing a continuous effort. However, when considering search engine optimization (SEO), separating them can prove advantageous, as it allows for a targeted approach to keywords and the specific audience being pursued. I have previously divided niches, which resulted in a transformative impact on SEO performance; my culinary website experienced a notable increase in traffic after I concentrated on keywords related to recipes. If time constraints are a concern, it may be prudent to begin with a single website and potentially utilize distinct sections.

I would recommend separating them. Managing two WordPress websites is not particularly difficult in the current context; it essentially involves having two tabs open in your browser. Therefore, I am puzzled by others' assertions that managing two sites is excessively burdensome. I currently own over 40 niche sites and find them relatively easy to operate.

It is advantageous to focus on a single niche. Based on my experience of developing over 40 sites, many of which are more generic or multi-niche, I have observed that those targeted towards a specific niche tend to perform better, gain traction more swiftly, and generate revenue at a faster rate.

Your strategy is sound; however, should you choose to utilize YouTube, you can monetize directly through YouTube by including a link to a product in the description or pinned comment prior to directing traffic to your site. YouTube has proven to be beneficial for me in this respect. While I also direct traffic from YouTube to my sites, I wanted to clarify that it is not a requirement to prioritize directing traffic to a website first.

I truly admire your professionalism! I'd love to hear your suggestions for my website. You mentioned sharing recipes on your cooking site, and with your level of experience, I’m sure you have some great ideas for me to consider relaunching a website about cooking or tech. What would you do now?
