My portfolio is growing, and I'm finding it a bit tricky to manage all my domains.
I'd love to "fan them out" to marketplaces like Afternic, Sedo, and Atom for the best exposure, and hopefully add even more marketplaces in the future, like Unstoppable Domains and Spaceship Seller Hub. I also want to create my landing pages.
Another key thing for me is to have the ability to update prices in just one place.
In addition, I'm juggling multiple registrars depending on how I acquired each domain. Most of mine come from auctions and the aftermarket, and I rarely do hand registration.
I've checked out a few solutions, and the most popular one (I won't call it out) seems to require handing over my API keys and secrets, along with usernames and passwords at times.
As a software developer with nearly 10 years of experience, I can't stress enough that you NEVER want to share those credentials with a web application. Even if they promise to encrypt it at rest (in the database), they still need to decrypt the data at some point, or else the API provider will reject your calls. Companies like GoDaddy and Sedo won't accept encrypted secrets; they must be in plaintext.
It's just too risky to share API secrets and passwords. An accidental mistake or a malicious act could expose your keys. A single erroneous keystroke or a wrongly scoped database query could unintentionally reveal your secrets. Plus, if attackers know there's valuable domain portfolios involved, your web application could become a target for hacking, leading to scenarios like unwanted domain transfers or changing nameservers to point to spam sites.
I'm curious—how do others manage an extensive domain portfolio?
