do we need two standalone sites for two different languages?

I have a domain name and English language WordPress website on .com. My client would like to add French and Spanish (Mexican market) languages to the site – I can use a WordPress plugin for that so they can select their language.

My question is do we buy domain.fr and domain.mx and simply redirect them to .com where they choose their language or build standalone sites in both French and Spanish?
